Consumers of software include businesses, as well as individuals. Commercial software sets limits on their freedom by not allowing them to adapt the software to their taste, by locking them into a single vendor's products, and burdening them with bugs in the software (not to mention exorbitant prices).

Open source software sets consumers free from issues such as collapse of their vendor due to market forces, legal entanglements, unfixed bugs, strategic decisions of your vendor, and exorbitant support fees.
